Perspiration in shoes

Perspiration in shoes can be dangerous

by | Dec 13, 2022

Personal protective equipment like helmets, boots, and gloves are popular among sports enthusiasts and people from other professions like coal mine workers, factory workers, and others. These types of equipment are helpful in protecting us from serious injuries. Depending upon the usage, environment, and conditions like temperature and humidity, however, using your gears fpr long can lead to the growth of certain bacteria. When worn for long, especially during long tours on bikes, Helmets and gloves lead to sweating on the head and hands, respectively. The same holds for shoes and socks. The moisture present within the helmets, gloves, and shoes provides an ideal environment for the growth of microbes. Bacteria that constitute the normal flora of the skin get the moisture and heat they require to flourish within these PPE.

Do You Know What Causes Smelly Shoes?

Have you ever wondered why your feet stink after taking off your shoes at the end of a long day? Do you speculate what’s causing the smelly shoes? If yes, it might be interesting for you to know why your feet suffer from odors. Here is the explanation:

Foot odor is a common issue that mostly results from sweat on your feet. However, the odor is not from the sweat but is a by-product developed after bacteria consume your sweat. Sweat is odorless; instead, it creates favorable conditions for the agents responsible for the smell. The build-up of sweat and bacteria causes your feet to smell. This condition is also called bromodosis, which develops because sweat causes bacterial growth leading to bad odors (Pickett, 2017).

Some people might have a condition of excessive sweating called hyperhidrosis which contributes to some dermatological conditions with bad odor. Excessive perspiration on the feet causes wetness of the sole of the shoes, which consequently results in friction blisters,  tinea pedis, or dyshidrotic eczema (Draelos, 2001).

Inside the shoes, the water vapors and heat are trapped due to an enclosed environment with high humidity and temperature. This environment maintains higher temperature and humidity because of sweat dissipation (Bouskill et al., 2002). It has been reported in a study that the humidity inside shoes from 96 to 100% might considerably result in the growth of bacteria or fungal colonization (Irzmańska et al., 2012). The bacterial infections most commonly involve erythrasma, which is involved in foot odor by degrading the leucine from the sweat, mostly by Staphylococcus epidermis. The most common fungal infections are dermatophytes (Ara et al., 2006). So, both the humidity and temperature in shoes show a positive impact on the growth of microbes on the skin leading to several hygienic problems.

Consequences

The foot odor is horrible for people, resulting in embarrassment and shame. This is because their feet are extra sweaty, which becomes home to a lot of bacteria, mostly Kytococcus sedentarius, which produce stinky organic compounds together with volatile sulfur compounds, and sulfur usually produces an intense and terrible stinking (Kumar and Mittal, 2022).
